The 11th Annual KIDflix Film Fest of Bed-Stuy is a free film festival for kids and their families organized by the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) held every Friday night in August in Fulton Park. 2010’s screenings are scheduled for Fridays, August 6, 13, 20th, 27th.

DEDICATED TO MS. DOLORES I. CARTY

Born in Harlem to Barbadian immigrants, Dolores Inniss attended P. S, 90, was a member of the Ethiopian Club and the juvenile component of Guiding Star Lodge. The family moved, via Father Divine’s (Peace, it’s wonderful!) organization, to Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, in the early ’40s where she graduated from P. S. 44 and Eastern District High School. Never having completed college, she did take continuing education courses at the college level. Her interest in the arts began early and she would sketch figures as a hobby, studied piano and performed locally in plays and concerts at her mother’s insistence; in addition, she played the French horn in the high school band.

Desiring to help her then husband’s career in fine and graphic arts, Ms. Inniss-Carty collaborated with Shirley Hawkins, Founder, and others to plan the first Fulton Art Fair in 1958. At that time, few African American artists were known to the art world; it was still more rare for the establishment to accept Blacks. Fulton Art Fair offered the first opportunity for a public exhibition of African American artists in their own community (Bedford Stuyvesant), free to all visitors and held in a public park (Fulton Park). None of the founders would have predicted Fulton Art Fair to still be vital in the 21st Century.

Film Short: MISUNDERSTOOD, Directed by Clark Johnson
2007-2008 National East Coast Contest Winner, Misunderstood is a story about two close brothers whose relationship is tested when both find themselves attracted to the same girl. As a rivalry ensues, the brothers must come to terms with their masculinity and their extent of loyalty. Written from student discussions at Manhattan’s High School for Graphic Communication Arts, Misunderstood depicts a personal journey to understanding what constitutes a boy from a man. Feature Film: SLINGSHOT HIP HOP
Directed by: Jackie Reem Salloum
First featured at Sundance 2008, the film follows Palestine’s first rap group DAM, and female artists Arapeyat and Sabreena Da Witch, through their struggle to replace violence with rhymes. The film compares the Arabic plight to that of black youth and parallels the two artforms. “The culture of hip hop and rap is at its most powerful and yet its most tender in Slingshot Hip Hop” – Chuck D, Public Enemy.

Film Short: MANCHILD, Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber
On the eve of his 18th birthday, Tommy’s responsibilities in this point in his life include raising his three younger sisters, maintaining his friendships and catering to his girlfriend. Forced into the position at a young age, Tommy must define for himself what it means to be a man. The film raises questions about the true meaning of masculinity and what institutes a right of passage. (Produced by Scenarios USA)

Feature Film: BRONX PRINCESS
Directed by: Yoni Brook and Musa Syeed
17-year-old Rocky reunites with her father, a chief in Ghana, West Africa. To do this she must leave the familiar streets of the Bronx after her high school graduation. At first, headstrong Rocky is excited to reach a new world of independence. However, she soon realizes the transition forces her to question her American values against African traditions and ultimately confront her dual cultures.

Film Short: BITTER MEMORIES, Directed by Joshua Marston
Rob grows up watching his father abuse his mother. When the effects of that household start to show in Rob’s mature relationships with women, Rob confronts his father’s behavior. This coming of age story communicates the strength required to break from the past and come to terms with ones own responsibilities. (Produced by Scenarios USA)

Feature Film: TROUBLE THE WATER
Directed by: Tia Lesson and Carl Deal
Winner of best documentary at Sundance 2008, the film highlights the disturbing scenes inside hurricane Katrina by incorporating the homemade film of Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist. The film shows the struggle to survive, the neglect of the Bush administration, and the heroism of streetwise citizens of New Orleans in 2006.

Film Short: SKIDDLES, Directed by Erwin “Brooklyn” Brown
When Tiny, the most popular girl in school breaks up with Jason after only two days, it’s up to Jason and his pals Timothy, Massia and Derrick to find out why. Set in the neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant, the short film takes us back to those teenage growing pains as we follow these middle school students through their trials and tribulations.
