KIDflix Film Festival Program
The 10th Annual KIDflix Film Fest of Bed-Stuy!
Fridays in August at 7:30pm! (rain date Saturday Night) at Fulton Park (Stuyvesant & Tubman/Fulton A/C to Utica) Sponsored by New York State Council on the Arts and Assemblywoman Annette Robinson

Date: Friday, August 7th
Film Short: MISUNDERSTOOD, Directed by Clark Johnson
2007-2008 National East Coast Contest Winner, Misunderstood is a story about two close brothers whose relationship is tested when both find themselves attracted to the same girl. As a rivalry ensues, the brothers must come to terms with their masculinity and their extent of loyalty. Written from student discussions at Manhattan’s High School for Graphic Communication Arts, Misunderstood depicts a personal journey to understanding what constitutes a boy from a man. (Produced by Scenarios USA).

Feature Film: SLINGSHOT HIP HOP
Directed by: Jackie Reem Salloum
First featured at Sundance 2008, the film follows Palestine’s first rap group DAM, and female artists Arapeyat and Sabreena Da Witch, through their struggle to replace violence with rhymes. The film compares the Arabic plight to that of black youth and parallels the two artforms. “The culture of hip hop and rap is at its most powerful and yet its most tender in Slingshot Hip Hop” – Chuck D, Public Enemy.

Date: Friday, August 14th
Film Short: MANCHILD, Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber
On the eve of his 18th birthday, Tommy’s responsibilities in this point in his life include raising his three younger sisters, maintaining his friendships and catering to his girlfriend. Forced into the position at a young age, Tommy must define for himself what it means to be a man. The film raises questions about the true meaning of masculinity and what institutes a right of passage. (Produced by Scenarios USA)

Feature Film: BRONX PRINCESS
Directed by: Yoni Brook and Musa Syeed
17-year-old Rocky reunites with her father, a chief in Ghana, West Africa. To do this she must leave the familiar streets of the Bronx after her high school graduation. At first, headstrong Rocky is excited to reach a new world of independence. However, she soon realizes the transition forces her to question her American values against African traditions and ultimately confront her dual cultures.

Date: Friday, August 21st
Film Short: BITTER MEMORIES, Directed by Joshua Marston
Rob grows up watching his father abuse his mother. When the effects of that household start to show in Rob’s mature relationships with women, Rob confronts his father’s behavior. This coming of age story communicates the strength required to break from the past and come to terms with ones own responsibilities. (Produced by Scenarios USA)

Feature Film: TROUBLE THE WATER
Directed by: Tia Lesson and Carl Deal
Winner of best documentary at Sundance 2008, the film highlights the disturbing scenes inside hurricane Katrina by incorporating the homemade film of Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist. The film shows the struggle to survive, the neglect of the Bush administration, and the heroism of streetwise citizens of New Orleans in 2006.

Date: Friday, August 29th
Performances by: Purelements
Film Short: SKIDDLES, Directed by Erwin “Brooklyn” Brown
When Tiny, the most popular girl in school breaks up with Jason after only two days, it’s up to Jason and his pals Timothy, Massia and Derrick to find out why. Set in the neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant, the short film takes us back to those teenage growing pains as we follow these middle school students through their trials and tribulations.

Featured Film: THE WIZ
Directed by: Sidney Lumet
You know how we do! Bring the family, friends and neighbors and come on and “Ease on down the road” with Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Richard Pryor and Bed Stuy’s own Lena Horne and of course, Michael Jackson in his award winning role as “Scarecrow” and don’t forget to dress up like your favorite Wiz character for our costume contest with prizes from our local businesses.

Otto Neals :: www.ottoneals.com

Born in Lake City, South Carolina, artist, sculptor and printmaker Otto Neals taught himself all mediums except printmaking which he learned at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. His commissioned works include a 20-foot mural at Brooklyn’s Kings County Hospital, a bronze work at the Brooklyn Children’s Center, 10 bronze plaques at the “Harlem Walk of Fame” and a bronze work at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Neals’ work appears in many collections, public and private, and has won many awards.

Ed Bates, painting

Edward Bates, (b.1925) is a native of Atlantic City, NJ and has lived in New York since 1957. After serving in the Navy for two years, this African American artist made his home in Brooklyn, NY and became a Textile Designer. Presently, living in Deer Park, NY, Edward is married to his wife Gladys and together they had six children. Upon retirement after already painting for 30 years, Edward was able to devote his time and passion to the development of his skills as an artist. A self-taught artisan, Edward lists amongst his achievements being the Grand Prize winner of a citywide contest sponsored by the New York City of Housing for his portrait of Eubie Blake. Edward has been a participant in the Fulton Street Art Show for over 25 years.

Will Gray, photography

Mr. Will Gray a former teacher of photography in the early 70s saw the medium as a way to communicate with wayward youth from the Fort Green section of Brooklyn. Mr. Gray was instrumental in the development of a community based photographic appreciation program that exposes underprivileged youth to the joys and excitement of photo journalism through visits to museums and art galleries. Mr. Gray’s experimentation with lighting, exposure settings and abstract dark room development techniques, such as double exposure has led Mr. Gray to develop his current view of photographic imagery. Mr. Gray’s desire to capture nature’s own paint palate has motivated the current photographic offer offerings.

While most of the photographs in Mr. Gray’s repertoire are of various species of orchids, they also include other flowers such as lilies and roses.

Amete Sellassie, painting

With almost 20 years at the NYC Department of Education and no formal art training, Amete Sellassie first began painting six years ago when she was assigned to assist an art teacher and she discovered the world of pastels and began painting. She found her inspiration in the works of Georgia O’Keefe and Frida Kahlo and later decided to try her hand at portraits. Amete Sellassie is known among her peers as an iconographer because her work depicts biblical figures and scenes inspired by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, as well as historical portraits of Ethiopian nobility.

Brian “Strong-Wind” Williams, Photo-Healing

It is through the camera lens that Strong-Wind captures the “Healing Energy” of the Earth.

Born in Queens, N.Y. in 1964, Brian Strong-Wind was raised in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York and currently resides with his family in the Clinton Hill section of this borough. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and The Technical Career Institute (T.C.I.) for Electrical Engineering. Brian Strong-Wind has been a licensed Private Investigator and owner of a Security Company (Talon Investigation & Security Company, Ltd.) for over 25 years. He holds two Black belts in Korean Martial Arts and specializes in Armed and Unarmed Executive Protection. Strong-Wind displayed an interest in artistic expression at an early age (Martial Arts, Poetry and Drawing). However, it was not until a trip to Teotihuacan, Mexico in March 2002 (during the Spring Equinox), that Strong-Wind says he was “Spiritually Commanded” to take photographs with the intent to heal others.
