HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS & KWANZAA PROGRAM
NOVEMBER 22, 2008-JANUARY 8, 2009
For the 2008 holiday season, the Skylight Gallery is pleased to present workshop activities for children, 8-14 and a family Kwanzaa celebration. These events are inspired by the gallery’s current exhibition Fulton Art Fair Legacy:The Next 50 Years. Eight amazing, diverse, primarily figurative African American artists of the 20th century are featured in this exhibition, they are Otto Neals, Miriam Francis, Edward Bates, Onaway Millar, Violet Hewitt Chandler, Emmett Wigglesworth, Brian Strong-Wind Williams and Brent Bailer. This visually exciting, multi-media exhibition affirms and celebrates the lives and history of this generation of African-American artists and people, while providing inspiration for all, but especially aspiring artists and today’s young people.

Featuring Fulton Art Fair founding members Otto Neals, Miriam Francis, Edward Bates, Violet Hewitt Chandler, Emmett Wigglesworth, primarily figurative artists and 2008 Fulton Art Fair winners Brian Strong-Wind Williams, photographer & Brent Bailer, figurative, pastels. Artists will be joined by Donovan Nelson, award winning artist and exhibition curator. While viewing their magnificent art work, this is an opportunity to learn firsthand from these artists about what inspires this group of world class 20th century African American figurative artists, who came of age in the tumultuous 50s and 60s and to learn how they sustains their creativity, family and activism.

Youth Workshop
Saturday, November 29, 2PM-5PM
Donovan Nelson, award winning portraiture and mural artist and curator will conduct this workshop. Participants will review portraits as an enduring style and will have opportunity to sketch each other.
Kwanzaa Celebration
Sat., Dec. 27th, 6PM-8PM.
On this second day of Kwanzaa, the principle to be celebrated is Kujichagulia (koo-gee-cha-goo-LEE-yah), meaning self-determination, which requires that we define our common interests and make decisions that are in the best interest of our family and community. This joyful celebration will be led by Dr. Segun Shabaka, National Association of Kawaida and will feature an introduction to Kwanzaa, with a candle lighting ceremony, music, light refreshments and token Zawadi, gifts of enrichment for young children. Families are invited and asked to bring fruit and juice for our Kwanzaa “feast.” Planning to identify co-sponsor
Youth Art Workshop
Figurative Realism, with artist Gerald Jones
Mon., Dec. 29, 1PM-3PM
Introduction to Figurative artwork, artist will show samples of pencil/ink drawings; participants will receive introduction in basic drawing techniques, including defining contour, light and shadow, review and discuss third dimension; examine light and shapes. Materials to be used will be provided. Youth will actually have an opportunity to draw an African mask, using pencil.
Youth Collage Workshop,
w/ artist Federicia Hartley
Saturday, January 3, 2009, 1PM-3PM
Introduction to collage, view slide show featuring works of distinguished, 20th century, African-American collage artists James Denmark and Romare Bearden. Instructor will demonstrate various approaches to collage art work. The workshop participants are asked to bring in copies of photos of themselves, family members or friends to be incorporated into their artwork.

Event would celebrate the lives, creativity and commitment of eight featured artists who represent FAF’s legacy and future. Pending confirmation, would hope reception would be hosted by some combination of the following:
